Nectar Garden Fun Day
As many of you already know, we’re in the process of creating a butterfly garden in our backyard. So I couldn’t resist attending the Nectar Garden Fun Day with my son yesterday morning at Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont. This is one of my favorite parks in the East Bay, with a boardwalk through the marsh, hills to climb, hiking trails along the San Francisco Bay, and, the reason for our visit today, a lovely nectar garden.
This was a nice little event. Within the nectar garden, the naturalist set up three tables with activities for the kids. Highlights for my son included looking for butterflies in the garden, coloring a butterfly metamorphosis booklet, making a little flower fridge magnet, and creating a clothes pin butterfly. My five-year-old boy wasn’t into the butterfly headband, but the ones the little girls were making were adorable. The naturalist also gave us milkweed / wildflower seeds to take home and plant. For the adults, they provided literature about butterflies native to our area and the plants they like. And we did see quite a few monarchs flying around, though I wasn’t able to capture a photograph of one. Fun!
Butterfly & Bird Festival
Bummed you missed this? Coming up on June 10th, from 10am-3:30pm, is one of our favorite Bay Area festivals, the Butterfly & Bird Festival, also held at Coyote Hills. We’ve attended this the past two years, and hope to make it again this year. Kids love this festival because of all the fun tables with activities and the music. For adults, it’s a nice event to learn about gardening for butterflies and birds, attend a tour of the nectar garden, listen to educational speakers, and visit the tables with native plants for sale. I highly recommend it!

You would love this garden! It’s filled not only with a huge assortment of plants for the butterflies, but also with butterfly art (fountains, sculptures, etc.).
