We have a new backyard visitor… a young, nimble, ravenous squirrel. Since this one arrived, we haven’t seen our resident three-legged squirrel. This one appears to have taken over the territory. Even worse? This one is light and agile enough to jump from our barbecue onto the bird feeder! We’ve moved things around and stumped him for the last day, but this guy is really tricky. It’s fun to watch him (her?) attempt to reach the feeder from all different approaches. It’s almost as if we can see the gears working in his head, trying to figure out the best angle of attack. On our side, the way this little guy eats, he’s not going to be so slim and athletic for long. When he puts on a couple more pounds and grows to adult size, our feeder should be safe again.
Lucky for the squirrel, as my son likes to say, “at least he’s super cute!”

We had to give up on our bird feeder because of the squirrels in our. We have a lot of trees in our backyard and tried a number of places but they managed to figure a way to get to anyplace we think of.

An oak tree (three, actually) covers our small backyard, making it tough for us, too. We’ve been unsuccessful with several other feeders, but this feeder has survived eight months without a squirrel figuring out how to get at it. I’ve watched the older squirrels try repeatedly to jump or climb onto it, but none has succeeded. The feeder is just out of range. This one’ll grow up soon, too.. it won’t be young and light for long.

We had one we called Commando Squirrel. He would climb along the telephone wire, then drop down on the platform feeder.

Yes, I’m surprised a squirrel hasn’t yet figured out how to simply drop down onto the feeder from the oak tree above.
