This Weekend! Harvest Festival, Ardenwood Historic Farm

Another of our favorite festivals is coming up this weekend… the Harvest Festival at Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont. This is such a fun festival for kids!

The highlight of this event for us is the corn picking.  How often do kids get to head into the fields and hand-pick corn??  My son (then four) ran into the corn fields over and over again last year, each time coming out with an armload full of corn.  He loved it!  Ardenwood grows two kinds of corn for visitors to pick during the Harvest Festival… the ornamental Indian corn, which are great for seasonal decorations, and popping corn.

Other fun activities include:

  • Grain milling:  Learn how corn and wheat are ground into flour
  • Corn husk doll making
  • Ice cream making
  • Train rides
  • Blacksmithing demonstrations
  • Magic and “wizard training” show for kids
  • Visit the animals in the farmyard
  • Tours of the Patterson House
  • Live music

When I was young my parents used to take me to a farm where you could pick your own peaches. You paid by the basket of peaches, and it was understood that you could eat as many as you liked while you were picking them. It was great fun and I have fond memories to this day of these outings. Letting the kids harvest food is a great idea!

How cool that you have fond memories of the peach picking! I try to head out with our son for picking of whatever is in season (strawberries, blackberries, tangerines, kiwi, apples, lemons, corn). So fun!
